'No to racists' call from bishop
The bishop says a vote for the BNP is bad for Blackburn
The Bishop of Blackburn has appealed to voters to turn their backs on extreme right-wing candidates.
The Right Reverend Alan Chesters said he would be disappointed if electors chose a candidate for the British National Party (BNP) in the town's council by-election on Thursday. He added it would be a major step back for the region if those who promoted divisive policies were supported. In May three BNP candidates won council seats in the local government elections in nearby Burnley. Bishop Chesters said: "I would be sad if Blackburn did that because it sends out a sign, particularly to the Asian community, that there are still questions if they should be here or not. "They are now very much part and parcel of the activities of the borough." The by-election candidates for the Mill Hill ward are: Gail Barton (Labour), David D'Arcy (Liberal Democrat), Karl Turner (Conservative) and Robin Evans (BNP).
