The French jazz pianist, Michel Petrucciani, has died in New York after becoming ill with a chest infection.

He was thirty-six, and was widely regarded as one of the leading international jazz virtuosos of his generation.

His stunted growth as a result of a childhood illness became a feature of his performances, when he would reach up to the piano keys.
