Reports from Sri Lanka say that flooding in northern and eastern parts of the country caused by prolonged heavy rains have forced more than twenty-thousand families to leave their homes.

In addition, about five-thousand acres of paddy fields in the Polonnaruwa district have been completely flooded.

The reports say local officials were seeking government help to feed people sheltering in schools and temples.
