New CCTV cameras for Soham
CCTV camera in Soham
The cameras overlook key spots in the town
New closed circuit television cameras have been switched on in Soham - three months after Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman went missing.

Seven cameras have been installed in the town while others are also in place in nearby Ely.

Soham Town Council said the cameras had been planned long before the disappearance of the two 10-year-old schoolgirls.

But Anne Tuite, chairman of the council, said: "People are feeling safer - it's definitely a deterrent."

Public responsibility

The cameras overlook key spots in Soham, including the High Street, the recreation ground and car parks.

CCTV manager Martin Beaumont said: "These cameras are very very good - they're almost at the top of the range."

But he added: "CCTV is not about Big Brother.

"We have a responsibility to the public not to invade their privacy."
