Harrison Ford America's favourite star

Harrison Ford: Worked as a carpenter before becoming a star

Indiana Jones actor Harrison Ford has been named America's favourite movie star, with the late John Wayne in second place.

The yearly Harris poll, showed that Ford, who starred in the Indiana Jones and Star Wars movies, was the number one choice among people aged 18 to 24 as well as for Americans overall.

John Wayne, the cowboy star who died in 1979 was the second most popular star, ahead of Mel Gibson, who came third and last year's favourite, Clint Eastwood, who this year shared fourth place with Top Gun star Tom Cruise.

Other stars in the top 10 list were Sean Connery, Brad Pitt, Jack Nicholson, Denzel Washington and Wesley Snipes.

The highest-ranking female was Pretty Woman star Julie Roberts who came in 15th position.

Stars who failed to make the top 10 this year included Kevin Costner, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Julia Roberts' Pretty Woman co-star Richard Gere.
