Disgraced Warne to lead Aussies

Warne (left) and Waugh have been dogged by scandal in recent months

Shane Warne's rehabilitation following the bookmaker scandal is now complete, after the leg-spinner was named as temporary captain of Australia's one-day team.

And Mark Waugh, who was fined by the Australian Cricket Board along with Warne for selling information on weather and pitch conditions to an Indian bookmaker in 1994, will be Warne's deputy.

The disgraced pair get their chance to lead the side at the start of the triangular tournament against England and Sri Lanka because regular one-day skipper Steve Waugh has a hamstring injury and will miss the first two games.

Australia open their campaign against England in Brisbane on Sunday and then take on Sri Lanka next Wednesday.

Waugh-weary Steve gets a rest

An ACB spokesman said Steve Waugh would travel with the squad, to allow him to oversee the team's preparations for next year's World Cup and to get treatment from the team's physiotherapist.

Once Waugh is fit one player will drop out of the squad.

There is no room in the party for a number of Australia's high profile players.

Mark Taylor, who led the Test side to yet another Ashes series victory, has been out of favour for one-day games over the last 12 months and again misses out.

Ian Healy, rated as the world's best Test wicketkeeper, is overlooked in favour of Adam Gilchrist, who is regarded as a better one-day batsman.

And there is no place for Michael Slater, despite the big-hitting batsman's reputation as a quick scorer at the top of the order and his brilliant century in the final Test against England in Sydney.

Australia squad: Steve Waugh (captain), Shane Warne (vice-captain), Michael Bevan, Greg Blewett, Adam Dale, Damien Fleming, Adam Gilchrist, Brendon Julian, Darren Lehmann, Glenn McGrath, Damien Martyn, Ricky Ponting, Mark Waugh, Brad Young.
