Former Israeli army chief to challenge Netanyahu

A former Israeli army chief, Amnon Lipkin-Shahak, has confirmed that he will be a candidate for prime minister in the forthcoming elections.

Seven people have now said they will challenge the present prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, when Israelis go to the polls in May.

The BBC Jerusalem correspondent describes General Lipkin-Shahak as a popular and charismatic figure.

Speaking at a news conference in Tel Aviv, the General said Mr Netanyahu was dangerous for Israel and would have to go.

He added that only a candidate from the centre could heal Israel's wounds.
