The two cars collided on the dual carriageway
The two cars collided on the citybound carriageway
A woman has died and a man has been injured in a road accident in County Down.

The man is in serious condition in hospital after the accident on the road between Newtownards and Dundonald shortly before 0830 GMT on Wednesday.

Three ambulances were called to the scene and the man and the woman were then taken to hospital.

It is understood two cars were in collision on the dual carriageway at the Kemp Stones Road outside Newtownards.

The main Newtownards to Dundonald citybound carriageway was closed for several hours after the crash.

Police Sergeant Ernie McCall called for any witnesses to come forward.

He said: "I would like to appeal to the people that were using this road at that time of the morning, if you saw this accident, please contact the police."
