Japanese foreign minister begins official visit to the Middle East

The Japanese Foreign Minister says his country is well placed to make a strong appeal for peace in the Middle East, because it has good relationships with all sides.

The minister, Masahiko Komura, begins a five day trip to the region today Wednesday, taking in Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Israel and the Palestinian self-ruled areas.

Mr Komura also said Japan has the added advantage of being able to offer financial aid to the countries in the region.
