First round exit for Rusedski

Greg Rusedski: Lost after going one set up

British number two Greg Rusedski has fallen at the first hurdle at the Qatar Open, losing in three sets to Germany's Bernd Karbacher.

The second-seeded Briton squandered two match points and a chance of progressing to potentially meet favourite Tim Henman in the final.

Rusedski took the first set comfortably 6-4 then fought his way to 5-4 up in the second set and 40-15 before Karbacher staged a fightback.

The German eventually took the second set on a tie-break which he dominated 7-1 and he maintained that form to cruise to a 6-3 victory in the final set.

It was hardly the ideal start to 1999 for Rusedski, who leaves Henman carrying British hopes in the first ATP tour tournament of the year. The British number one is through to the second round after beating Dutchman Sjeng Schalken is straight sets on Monday.

Czech Petr Korda and Frenchman Cedric Pioline were also early casualties, along with Carlos Costa of Spain.

Croatia's Goran Ivanisevic scraped through along with other big names including Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia.
