President Clinton has also given permission to the US baseball team, the Baltimore Orioles, to arrange exhibition matches with the Cuban national side.

Representatives from the Orioles will travel to Cuba soon to discuss terms for a game there, and one in Baltimore.

Proceeds must go to charities working in Cuba.

US officials say the sporting exchange was approved because baseball is a special part of both Cuban and American culture.
