Uni honours singer Lulu

Lulu is set to become a Doctor of Letters
Scottish singer Lulu is set to receive an honorary degree from a university in her native city next week.

The 55-year-old will become an Honorary Doctor of Letters at Glasgow Caledonian University on Wednesday.

The accolade is being given in recognition of her special contribution to music in a career spanning more than 40 years.

Magnus Magnusson, the university's new chancellor, will preside over the awards ceremony for the first time.

In the 36 years since she made her chart debut, Lulu - real name Marie Macdonald Maclaughlan Lawrie - has had 16 top 40 hits including a collaboration with Take That on Relight My Fire, her only number one.

She topped the US charts with To Sir With Love at the age of 18 and jointly won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1969 with Boom-Bang-A-Bang.

The Glasgow-born entertainer also teamed up with David Bowie who wrote The Man Who Sold The World for her and was given the honour of performing the Bond theme for The Man With The Golden Gun.

Two years ago Lulu said she was "over the moon" at being awarded an OBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

Album success

Earlier this year Lulu had a best selling album pairing up with the likes of Elton John, Sam Mumba and Paul McCartney.

Next month she releases a single from that album, 'We've Got Tonight' with Ronan Keating.

The singer has written her autobiography, called I Don't Want to Fight.

Her 'graduation' from Glasgow Caledonian University has been scheduled for Wednesday at the city's Royal Concert Hall.
