Tuesday, January 5, 1999 Published at 18:05 GMT UK Child killer attacked in jail ![]() Leisk was saved by intervention of warden A paedophile jailed for the murder of a schoolboy has been injured in an attack by another inmate. Steven Leisk, 34, needed stitches after the attack at the high security wing of Peterhead Prison, in north-east Scotland. Leisk, who was jailed for life for the murder of nine-year-old Scott Simpson in Aberdeen in July 1997, was pressing clothes in the laundry when the attack happened. Prison officers intervened to halt the attack on Leisk, who was repeatedly kicked and punched in the face. An official said: "Leisk received facial injuries but the wardens' quick interception certainly saved him from more severe damage." He said the matter is considered to be closed and refused to reveal what disciplinary measures are being taken against the attacker. 'Pack his bags' The Scott Simpson murder inquiry was the catalyst for a series of events that ultimately led to the early retirement of Grampian Police Chief Constable Dr Ian Oliver. It was revealed the force had failed to treat Leisk, who was living in Aberdeen, as a prime suspect - even though he was under social work supervision. An independent police inquiry heavily criticised Grampian Police's handling of the case, prompting calls for Dr Oliver to go. On receiving the findings, Scottish Secretary Donald Dewar urged Dr Oliver to "pack his bags and go now". Dr Oliver, however, claimed he had been the victim of a concerted negative campaign by ministers and the media. |
