The Zambian President, Frederick Chiluba, has replaced his army commander, General Solomon Mumbi, with the former deputy commander, Goejago Musengele.
No reason was given, but correspondents say General Mumbi recently criticised the government for delays in paying benefits to retired soldiers; There's speculation the move could be linked to this.
General Mumbi was appointed army commander in 1997 after he helped put down a military coup against Mr Chiluba.
