US jets fire on Iraqi planes

US warplanes are reported to have clashed early on Tuesday with Iraqi jets that violated the no-fly zone in southern Iraq.

A US military official said warplanes patrolling the no fly zone responded after being "engaged" by Iraqi jets.

The US planes are reported to have fired missiles at several Iraqi fighters.

The military official confirmed that US and Iraqi warplanes "clashed" but he would not describe the encounter in more detail, saying the particulars were still being studied.

It was the third incident in less than a week involving US warplanes enforcing the no-fly zone.

The Iraqi jets were "breaching the no fly zone as they have done over the past several days," the official said.

"This was fairly aggressive. It was more aggressive than what we've seen before."
