Burma's medical schools reopen

Burma's military government says it has reopened at least three medical schools in the capital, Rangoon and in Mandalay.

The institutes were closed in 1996, along with some universities, amid anti-government demonstrations.

Correspondents say the move indicates that the government now feels more confident about the security situation in the country.

They say there is speculation that the reopening of the medical schools is an experiment to test the atmosphere for the reopening of the universities.
