Anwar custody injuries caused by police

The Attorney-General in Malaysia has said police were responsible for injuriessuffered in jail by the former Deputy Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim, who's on trial for alleged corruption and illegal homosexual activity.

The statement by the Attorney-General, Mohtar Abdullah, confirms accusations by Mr Anwar's supporters that he was beaten after his arrest last September.

Mr Anwar still had a black eye when he made his first court appearance.

However, Mr Mohtar did not say who exactly had beaten Mr Anwar.

The BBC Correspondent in Kuala Lumpur says the admission is a morale-booster for Mr Anwar and his supporters, who allege he's the victim of a political conspiracy.

The statement came a few hours after the prosecution in the trial said it was closing its case and would call no further witnesses.

Lawyers for Mr Anwar says they'll recall some of the prosecution witnesses
