Second body found in Iona

Coastguards found the body near the capsize area

Rescue workers searching for victims of the Iona boat tragedy have found a second body.

Coastguards found the body on Monday, washed up near Fionnphort on the Mull coastline - about 500 yards from where four men disappeared when their dinghy capsized three weeks ago.

Five men were swept into the sea after a large wave hit their dinghy in the sound between the islands of Iona and Mull.

The four who died were Robert Hay, 23, whose body has already been recovered, Ally Doughall, 19, David Kirkpatrick, 23, and Logie McFadyen, 24.

Gordon Grant, 33, was the only survivor of the tragedy which happened on 13 December last year as the five friends, all from Iona, were returning from a party on Mull.

Sergeant Stuart McNaughton of Strathclyde Police said they were not yet able to identify the body.

"We cannot comment about who it might be until we have done a post mortem examination and the identity has been confirmed," he said.

The examination will take place on Tuesday.
