Nigeria - last of 8 bidders to host World Cup 2006

Football's world governing body, FIFA, says it's accepted a late bid from Nigeria to host the World Cup in the year 2006.

Formal bidding closed on December the thirty-first, but Nigeria's informal bid has now been accepted after the Nigerian football association submitted all the required paper-work.

Four other candidates are from Africa: Egypt, Morocco, Ghana and South Africa.

The president of FIFA, Sepp Blatter, has openly supported the World Cup being hosted in Africa.

The other contenders are England, Germany and Brazil.

Correspondents say South Africa is widely considered to be the front-runner -- despite its high crime rate.

A decision is expected in March 2000.
