FA pulls together

David Davies (centre): "This is a time for unity"

The Football Association stood united on Monday, following the resignation of chief executive Keith Wiseman.

Wiseman had earlier stepped down at a full FA council meeting, declaring that he had made mistakes in his contacts with the Welsh FA.

At a media conference at Lancaster Gate in London, the FA told how the council had heard from vice chairman Geoff Thompson and then Wiseman about details of the controversial grant to the Welsh FA.

That deal, which led to the resignation of FA chief executive Graham Kelly, involved a £3.2m grant to fund Welsh youth development in return for their support for England's bid to obtain a seat on FIFA's executive council.

Wiseman spoke for over an hour at the council meeting and conceded he had made mistakes in his handling of some aspects of his contacts with the Welsh FA. He then offered his resignation and it was accepted unanimously.

Thompson will take over as acting chairman and will lead the search for a successor - likely to be appointed at the Council's full meeting in June.

In a statement the FA said: "Football in this country is bigger and more important than any individual.

"Those of us who have temporary responsibility for the management of the FA hope and believe we'll get the support we need from everybody in the game, and in the media, at this time.

"We know the task we face and we won't be found wanting."

Acting chief executive David Davies, said: "This is a time for unity and you have unity here today (Monday).

"I've not been involved in a news conference like this in the five years that I've been at the FA and you have unprecedented unity in the game at this time and that's what is important."
