Windies scrape through

Darryl Cullinan: Hit a Test record of 168 in South Africa's first innings

The West Indies narrowly avoided the follow-on when they were bowled out for 212 by tea on Monday, the third day of the fourth Test against South Africa at Newlands.

South Africa held a first-innings lead of 196 runs.

An aggressive innings of 37 by all-rounder Ottis Gibson, who was playing provincial cricket in South Africa when he was called into the side as a replacement last Friday, took the tourists past the follow-on target of 207.

South Africa would probably not have enforced the follow-on as their star fast bowler Allan Donald was out of action with a hamstring injury.

Carl Hooper top-scored for the West Indies with 86 before being run out by a superb throw from the cover boundary by South African captain Hansie Cronje.

Cronje also held a remarkable catch at short cover when he juggled a full-blooded drive by Nixon McLean after Gibson and McLean put on 35 for the eighth wicket with both batsmen surviving chances.

Gibson was dropped on five when Paul Adams dived forward at square leg but could not hold a difficult catch off Cronje, and was also missed by wicketkeeper Mark Boucher off David Terbrugge when on 14.

McLean survived a chance at deep mid-off to substitute Ashwell Prince off Adams.

Donald wrecked the West Indies top-order on Sunday with an opening spell of three for 13 but was off the field for the last hour-and-a-half after straining his left hamstring.

West Indian fast bowler Curtly Ambrose also suffered and seems unlikely to bowl in the second innings. He batted with a runner after suffering a hamstring injury during the first innings.
