A church official in Russia says thieves have robbed one of Russia's oldest and most famous churches, the Intercession cathedral on the river Nerl.
Ikons, gold and silver chains, crosses and other items were taken and an investigation into the case has begun.
The church, near the city of Vladimir, about hundred-and-sixty kilometres from Moscow, dates back to the twelfth century.
Correspondents say icons and other religious artefacts are popular targets for thieves who often try to sell them abroad.
