Graham Anker, 43, of no fixed address, was remanded for three days by magistrates in Newton Abbot, Devon.

He was charged with kidnapping a 48-year-old woman and her 17-year-old daughter, who cannot be named for legal reasons, at Netherton, near Newton Abbot.

He was also charged with wounding the mother with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

It was alleged that the women were forced into a car and driven to a field, where the mother suffered knife wounds to her hands in a struggle.

After the hearing, police appealed to people in the Babbacombe area of Torquay to be on the look-out for a tent, and a red, blue or green sleeping bag, and a rucksack, water bottle and mug.
