President Alberto Fujimori of Peru has named the current leader of congress, Victor Joy Way, as his new prime minister.

Mr Fujimori said a new cabinet would be named on Tuesday after consultations with the prime minister-designate.

Regarded as a close ally of the president, Mr Joy Way replaces Alberto Pandolfi, who tendered his resignation last month with his cabinet colleagues, in line with regular reshuffles carried out by Mr Fujimori.

Earlier, the president denied he was suffering from cancer of the tongue and neck.

In response to comments by an opposition congressman, Mr Fujimori said his health was so good that he did not even rest from work on New Year's Day.
