Oil price forces cut in pilgrims' allowance

Falling oil revenues have prompted the Iranian government to cut allowances for pilgrims travelling to the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia.

The Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance said the allowance would be cut to two-hundred-and-twenty-seven dollars because of reduced foreign exchange earnings.

It called for the creation of a conducive cultural environment to attract more tourists to Iran to help make up the shortfall.
