Antiguan charged with murder of Scot

Louise Torrens went to Antigua to work on yachts

A man has been charged with the murder of a Scottish woman on the Caribbean island of Antigua.

Louise Torrens, 24, whose family live at Bridge of Weir, in Renfrewshire, was found dead with multiple injuries in a burned-out house on Christmas Day.

The house where she was found had been set on fire after she died. A next-door neighbour also died.

A 36-year-old Antiguan man has appeared in a magistrates court charged with murder and his trial is scheduled for March.

Louise was understood to have had a relationship with a local man, Steadroy McDougal.

She left Scotland last autumn to spend the winter working on yachts on the island, which is a popular holiday destination.

A neighbour of the Torrens family, who did not wish to be named, said: "Everyone round here is terribly shocked about what has happened. Louise was a lovely, independent girl, a free spirit who was off on an adventure."
