Plucky West undo Wasps

West Hartlepool 2-17 Wasps

Wasps' championship challenge was dealt a serious blow as the home side picked up only their second win of the season.

West, who were hammered 71-14 at Loftus Road in September, gained revenge as Mike Brewer's revitalised team bossed the game from the opening whistle.

Wasps went into game having won their last four but the hosts set the tone when the pack drove over from a line-out for flanker James Ponton to touchdown.

Vile added the conversion from the corner, and Kenny Logan missed two penalty kicks in reply.

But Wasps were able to take advantage of their extra power up front and in the 26th minute number eight Peter Scrivener completed a pushover from a five-metre scrum.

The home side finished the first 40 minutes on a high as Vile found Toby Handley in acres of space on the left and the stand-in winger easily ran in an unconverted try.

West crucially struck twice midway through the half, Vile kicking a penalty and full-back Emmet Farrell landing a drop goal to put the basement club 18-5 ahead.

Wasps boss Nigel Melville made five substitutions in order to breath fresh life into his side, but it Vile put the game out of their reach with his second penalty.

A try from Dinos Alexopolous after 76 minutes and one from Nick Greenstock in injury time ran in allowed them to finish on a high but they had given themselves too much to do after a poor first half.
