Richie pickings for Wednesday

Dejan Stefanovic wraps it up for Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday 4 Norwich City1

Ritchie Humphreys grabbed his first goals in nearly two years to help guide The Owls towards a fourth round tie at home to Stockport.

BBC Radio 5 Live's David Oates reports from Hillsborough
The 21-year-old striker, only playing because of injury to Andy Booth, last scored in the FA Cup in 1997 but repaid manager Danny Wilson's faith in him by netting twice in the first half.

"I thought Richie was excellent today. He deserved rewards with the work-rate he's been putting in recently and he got them today," said Wilson.

Norwich started the better of the two teams, with Darren Eadie troubling the home defence and forcing Pavel Srnicek into early action.

The goalkeeper also saved well from Neil Adams but Humphreys calmed the Hillsborough faithful after 18 minutes when he played a one-two with Benito Carbone and shot through the 'keeper's legs to give Wednesday the lead.

His second followed in the 33rd minute, Watt parried his initial header from Carbone's cross but Humphreys kept his composure to put away the rebound.

He displayed his increased confidence by providing a third for Peter Rudi on 40 minutes.

Veteran striker Iwan Roberts gave the travelling Norwich fans some hope as he headed in from a corner just before half-time, but it proved to be merely a consolation goal.

The game lost some of its competitiveness in the second half, as Wednesday used their commanding position to stifle any attacking threat from the visitors.

But Dejan Stefanovic, recently sent off against Aston Villa in the league, netted for the first time this season by bundling Andy Hinchcliffe's corner over the line.

The omens look good for Wednesday, who last won the cup in 1935 when their road to the final included a fifth round win over Norwich.

But both managers afterwards criticised the decision to stage the fourth round draw while the match was taking place.

"They should let the games finish before doing the draw. I presume it's the television companies trying to get one up on the others. I didn't think it was fair at all," said Wilson.

Norwich boss Bruce Rioch agreed, adding: "It shouldn't happen that teams are playing a match in one of the major domestic competitions in the world and a draw is done involving the two teams involved.

"It's unfair, it's unnecessary and it could have an effect on teams and players. They should seriously look at and amend that. It belittles the competition."
