Riots in Indonesia

Police in Indonesia say an angry crowd has set fire to shops, cars, and a police station in the country's second city, Surabaya.

Several people were arrested.

The incident followed rumours that suspected thieves had died in police custody.

The police acknowledge that one suspect died, but say he was in a critical condition when he was brought in and deny that he was tortured.

Correspondents say there's been a long-running dispute in the city's Citra Raya residential complex between residents and the original inhabitants, who complain they didn't get enough compensation when the property developers began work on the site twenty years ago.

Meanwhile, police in the capital, Jakarta, say they are investigating a bomb explosion that has damaged an empty department store.
