Wednesday, January 6, 1999 Published at 09:31 GMT Sport: Football Mixed fortunes for non-leaguers Yeovil joined Vauxhall Conference rivals Rushden & Diamonds in the bag for Sunday's FA Cup fourth round draw by earning a replay at Cardiff. Substitute Christian Roberts saved the Welsh club from defeat with an equaliser six minutes from time after their former striker Carl Dale had put Yeovil in front. The home side's finishing was poor in the opening half with Jason Fowler, John Williams and Danny Hill all shooting wide when well-placed, although Hill forced Tony Pennock to a tremendous save in the 28th minute. But Dale silenced the Cardiff fans after 54 minutes when he netted from close range after Matt Hayfield flicked on a corner. David Piper had a chance to double their lead when he broke clear but his effort was kicked off the line by Mark Delaney. The equaliser came when Roberts nodded in at the far post and they came close to a last-gasp winner when Kevin Nugent beat the Yeovil 'keeper with a looping header, only for Kevan Brown to head the ball away from under the bar. Second Division Leyton Orient ended Southport's Cup adventure with a workmanlike 2-0 win at Haig Avenue. The Conference part-timers were agonisingly close to a goal before the break with Orient's Matthew Joseph clearing off the goal-line from Phil Horner and Tim Ryan. Orient had the wind in their favour in the second half but it took a controversial penalty decision to give them the lead. Horner was adjudged to have fouled Carl Griffiths and skipper Dean Smith stepped up to hammer the spot-kick home. Southport were unable to raise their game and Griffiths side-footed another from Junior McDougald's left-wing centre. It could have been even worse as the Londoners hit the post twice. |
