One of the main tourist sites in the Italian city of Florence, the Medici chapel, has been closed to the public after a block of marble fell from a column.

The incident occurred during the night; a local cultural official said there could have been lethal consequences if the block, weighing several kilograms, had fallen when the chapel was open.

The chapel was Michelangelo's first architectural work.
