Catling deepens Bath gloom

Richard Tombs drives through the Bath defence

Gloucester 23-7 Bath

Full-back Chris Catling scored two first half tries as Gloucester outplayed their west country rivals in front of a capacity 11,000 crowd at Kingsholm.

BBC News 24's Robin Bailey reports
It was Bath's sixth successive league defeat, increasing the pressure on coach Andy Robinson, and they lost lock Nigel Redman with suspected concussion

"It is not a nice feeling, but in sport you have highs and lows," Robinson said afterwards.

"This is the lowest ebb that I have known for me in sport, but like I've said before and I will say again, I am not a quitter. I enjoy the job and we are all working together to try and turn things round."

Poor defending enabled Catling to claim the opening touchdown and his seventh of the season followed after Terry Fanoluah sent him racing clear.

Mark Mapletoft convereted the second and also added two penalties despite a heavy pitch and there was worse to come for Bath as Catling brust through a midfield gap to return the compliment to Fanoluah in the 42nd minute.

Redman had already departed by that stage but Bath saved some face when Adedayo Adebayo claimed a consolation try.

The visitors had Mark Regan and Richard Webster back in their pack but the impressive Gloucester forwards, superbly led by flu-hit captain Rob Fidler, stepped up a gear to prevent any further damage.

"I feel for Andy. He is on a hiding to nothing, but he has got a tremendously talented squad with players, some of whom coaches would give their right arms to work with," said Gloucester coach Richard Hill, a former Bath captain.

"I think Andy should be given the chance to get Bath out of their current position. He will learn from his experiences over the past few weeks, and I think it would be wrong for him to move on at this stage."
