Official data released in France shows that at least fifty people were killed in road accidents there on New Year's Day -- more than double the level of theprevious two years.
The National Road Information Centre said over half those killed were aged under twenty-five.
It gave no explanation for the increase and said most cases involved careless driving.
About twenty people were killed on New Year's Day in both 1997 and 1998.
