Millions of workers strike in West Bengal

More than five million workers in the Indian state of West Bengal have observed a one day strike in support of a minimum wage.

Thousands of factories closed but hospital and transport services were maintained.

The strike, by workers in industries where labour is not organised, was called by leftist trades unions pressing for the extension of what they describe as basic workers' rights.

West Bengal has been governed by a leftist coalition for more than twenty years.
