Boyzone in Omagh tribute

Boyzone: Recently appeared in U2 video

Teenage boy band Boyzone are meeting victims of the Omagh bombing and playing two special tribute concerts in the town in Northern Ireland.

The BBC's Caroline Turriff: "Concerts will give a lift to the young people of Omagh"
The event is seen as a major boost for the young people of Omagh struggling to come to terms with the aftermath of the bombing in August. Twenty-nine people were killed and hundreds more injured.

Boyzone said they were be eager to do anything they could to help.

"The boys have been saying they want to do whatever they can to help. They believe that sometimes music is the best thing to cross boundaries," said a spokeswoman.

Lead singer Ronan Keating has already visited a young girl blinded in the bombing and the band's hit single Words features on the Omagh tribute album Across the Bridge of Hope.

The band are staging two shows at Omagh's leisure centre. They were recently voted Best Band on the Planet in a Smash Hits poll.

Joe Byrne, an SDLP councillor in the town, said it was a massive boost. "The young people here, including my own two daughters, are delighted that Boyzone are paying a special visit to Omagh.

"They have all been through so much and everything that helps them look to the future is to be welcomed."
