Saturday, January 2, 1999 Published at 09:10 GMT World: Americas Castro's 40 years of revolution President Fidel Castro of Cuba has marked the fortieth anniversary of the revolution that brought him to power with a speech denouncing global capitalism. The theology of free markets had led to unbridled speculation, he said, which was turning the world into a giant casino -- a system that was unsustainable. President Castro also denounced what he called the dictatorship of the United Nations Security Council and said it should include more Third World members. His speech was delivered from the same balcony in the eastern town of Santiago de Cuba from which he proclaimed victory on January-the-first 1959. He praised the achievements of the revolution in education and health, but made little reference to recent economic problems. Correspondents say many Cubans blame these on the government rather than United States trade sanctions. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
