It says long-term projects are at risk because of a squeeze on spending. Since 1995, Scotland's area tourist boards get 70% of their funding from local authorities, membership and commerce. A further 16% comes from the Scottish Tourist Board itself, with the rest made up of funding for special projects. The Scottish Tourist Board is calling on the parliament to bring in a more stable funding structure. It says many area boards saw their budgets cut back in 1998. The area boards represent 16,000 members and form the backbone of Scotland's tourist industry. Tourism is Scotland's biggest employer and provides more jobs than the oil, gas and whisky industries put together. It contributes more than £2.5bn to Scottish coffers.
