Saturday, January 2, 1999 Published at 02:26 GMT World: Middle East Tourists undeterred by Yemen kidnap ![]() Western tourists remain easy prey for kidnappers By Frank Gardner in Sanaa Most of the British survivors of the kidnap crisis in Yemen have arrived safely back in Britain. But back in Yemen Western tourists continue to arrive in the country, oblivious to the UK Foreign Office's travel advisory which warns against unnecessary visits. Take a stroll through the crowded marketplaces of Sanaa's old quarter and you could be forgiven for thinking that Monday's kidnapping had never taken place. In the midst of a throng of turbaned Yemeni merchants selling lethal curved daggers, blonde-haired Europeans make their way uncertainly. They have come to Yemen to explore one of the oldest cultures on earth and to visit a people whose hospitality is legendary. Easy prey
But while the vast majority of Yemenis welcome their presence, Western tourists remain easy prey for kidnappers. As one Yemeni psychologist put it, they are unarmed and they belong to no tribe here. If someone should hold them hostage, then they have only the government to rescue them - and according to some of the freed hostages now in Britain, that can be a mixed blessing. |
