Friday, January 1, 1999 Published at 18:20 GMT Sport: Rugby League Giants squash Halifax Huddersfield 28-10 Halifax Mal Reilly's new-look Huddersfield got 1999 off to a flying start with a comfortable friendly success over near-neighbours Halifax. A five-try romp was just what the Giants needed and Australian Jim Lenihan, one of the three new signings on display for the home side, led the way with two. The best score of the match, however, came from Craig Weston, who burst 85 metres on the stroke of half-time to cross after Halifax new boy Paul Broadbent carelessly threw the ball away. Huddersfield dominated the early exchanges and the only surprise was that it took them 20 minutes to open their try-scoring account, Lenihan touching down after Bobbie Goulding's clever crossfield kick. Martin Moana pulled one back for the Blue Sox with a superb individual effort during a brief rally but his effort apart, the visitors were never in contention. Things went bad to worse for Halifax after the break, with South African Jamie Bloem sent off by referee Karl Kirkpatrick for a spear tackle within 90 seconds of returning to the field after being sin-binned for dissent. Matt Sturm and Paul Loughlin barged over the line shortly afterwards and Lenihan completed the rout with his second a minute from time.
