Karnataka clashes continue

combines 1330 INDIA GUJARAT ARRESTS and 1500 INDIA KARNATAKA DEATHS Police in the south Indian state of Karnataka say one man was killed and four others injured when they opened fire to restore order in the port city of Mangalore during clashes between Hindu and Muslim youths.

It's the third day of clashes in the state and raises the number of dead to six.

The Hindu nationalist BJP, which leads the federal coalition in Delhi, is beginning a meeting of its national leadership in the Karnataka state capital Bangalore tomorrow, which correspondents say is expected to address the growing criticism of the government over recent attacks on minority communities.

The authorities in the western Indian state of Gujarat have announced that more than eighty people have been arrested there in connection with clashes between Hindus and Christians in Ahowar Dang district earlier this week.
