Friday, January 1, 1999 Published at 17:13 GMT World: Americas Argentina joins UN Security Council Argentina is joining the United Nations Security Council from today on a two-year mandate. Its membership comes as Argentina, Brazil and Mexico continue their campaign to secure permanent seats in an eventual restructuring of the Security Council. The Council has five permanent members, the United States, Russia, China, Britain and France, as well as ten non-permanent members. Of the Latin American countries Costa Rica is ending its mandate today while Brazil remains in the council for another year. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
