Chiapas anniversary

Thousands of Indians in the Mexican state of Chiapas are celebrating the fifth anniversary of the uprising of the Zapatista National Liberation Army in 1994.

Most of them are gathering at the town of La Realidad, one of the places in Chiapas under Zapatista control.

Negotiations with the Mexican government over greater rights for the indigenous Indian population broke off more than two years ago.

Human rights groups have accused the Mexican army of killings, arbitrary detentions and abuses since the Zapatista uprising.
