Karnataka clashes continue

There have been further clashes in the south Indian state of Karnataka between Hindu and Muslim youths.

Police say one man was killed and four others injured when they opened fire to restore order in the port city of Mangalore.

At least six people have now died in three days of violence in the state.

Riot police have been called out in affected areas and the Karnataka home/interior minister, Roshan Baig, has urged both sides to maintain the peace.

The Hindu nationalist BJP, which heads the federal governing coalition, is beginning a meeting of its national leadership tomorrow in the Karnataka state capital Bangalore; it has already come under international criticism for failing to protect Christians from attack by Hindu extremists.
