Gareth Barry - wants a full England cap in 1999

England under-21 international Gareth Barry has agreed a new five-year contract with Aston Villa.

The 17-year-old defender, a regular member of Villa's first team this season, will sign the new deal on his birthday next month.

Barry denied reports that he will receive a basic £2,500 a week plus a further £7,500 for every game he plays for the club.

"It is not as high as that, but I am really pleased that things have been finalised as regards the contract.

"It has been a great year for me, becoming a regular so far this season and making the breakthrough on the England front," said Barry.

He has set himself two targets for the New Year, one of which is winning a place in the senior England squad.

"The first of those targets is to stay in the Villa team. It's still all a massive learning curve for me anfd I am not getting carried away or letting things go to my head."
