Germany assumes EU presidency
Germany has taken over the presidency of the European Union for the next six months.
In his new year address, the German Chancellor, Gerhard Schroeder, said he aimed to launch reforms in finance, agriculture and, in particular, job creation.
Mr Schroeder also looked forward to the return this year of Germany's government to the former imperial capital of Berlin.
