Police in France say they arrested seventeen people after riots in the eastern city of Strasbourg during which a number of cars were set on fire.
Correspondents say the clashes happen regularly in poor areas of the city on New Year's Eve and the authorities had staged a week of free concerts to try to prevent youths from rioting.
The mayor Roland Ries said the concerts were not a miracle cure and the results would have to be assessed.
