Majoli misses Melbourne

Iva Majoli in action at last year's US Open

Croatian Iva Majoli has pulled out of this month's Australian Open in Melbourne because of a foot injury.

The 1997 French Open champion will not be fit for the start of the year's first Grand Slam championship, which starts on January 18, after suffering the injury in training.

"I know that I will not be ready, so it is better for me to let people know now," she said.

Majoli, now ranked 21st in the world, has never gone further than the quarter-final stage in Melbourne and was beaten in the third round last year.

She hopes to return to action at the WTA Tour event in Tokyo next month.
