Friday, January 1, 1999 Published at 04:17 GMT UK Accident victims in Downing Street vigil ![]() Charity wants integrated strategy to reduce accident death tolls Road traffic victims are to deliver a wreath to 10 Downing Street to press for more action to combat accident death tolls. RoadPeace, the national charity for road traffic victims, will also send flowers to five key government departments. The organisation wants the departments to work in partnership "to come up with an integrated strategy to dramatically reduce the road casualty toll". "Road deaths and injuries are mass disasters which can be prevented," said RoadPeace national secretary Brigitte Chaudhury.
Dr Ian Roberts of the Institute of Child Health added: "The number of child road deaths is equivalent to a Dunblane massacre every month. "With Dunblane, there was a rapid policy response with regard to gun use, as well as due consideration for the feelings of the families concerned. "By contrast, there is almost complete indifference to the plight of road traffic victims and no concerted action to stop the killing." Flowers were being delivered to the departments of Health, Education and Employment, Transport, and Social Security and also to the Home Office. |
