Japanese PM sees positive growth in 1999

The Japanese prime minister, Keizo Obuchi, in his New Year message, says he's confident Japan will return to positive growth in the year ahead.

He said Japan's economic revival was important to the world at large and to Asia in particular.

Mr Obuchi said his government's major themes for 1999 were restoring the financial system - currently suffering from bad debt - reviving industrial production and increasing employment opportunities.
