Berti heads for Spain

Berti pleads for leniency against Middlesbrough

Tottenham midfielder Nicola Berti is set to turn his back on a move to Brazil and make the shorter journey to Spain.

The 31-year-old Italian international had been expected to join Brazilian club Fluminese after failing to win a regular place at White Hart Lane following the arrival of manager George Graham.

But Spanish Primera Division side Alaves say they have reached a deal with Berti and will formally present him to supporters next week.

Tottenham director of football David Pleat said earlier this week: "Berti has been told we would release him if he managed to get fixed up with another club."

Berti has 39 international caps and was a member of Italy's 1990 and 1994 World Cup squads. He also helped Inter Milan to win the UEFA Cup in 1991 and 1994.
